Subject: SPERRY GAME CANCELLED TONIGHT, ice problems

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have to cancel tonight’s Sperry hockey game due to ice issues at the rink. Will B just informed me that there’s been a technical issue, and they’re closing the rink today. I have no word on how long the rink will be down. If you know somebody who’s supposed to play tonight, please inform them just in case they don’t see this email.

Sorry about that, and we’ll take care of cancelling payment authorizations for tonight’s game. We’re hoping to get another one or two games in before the summer session ends.

Thanks everybody.

David D

Final Game of the 2016-17 hockey season?

Sorry for the abrupt cancellation of the 9 March game.  We were as surprised by the game time change as you were.

Is this the Final Game of the 2016-2017 Season?

We debated cancelling the remaining games this season as well, but we thought we would give it a try and see if enough players and goalies sign up to make it possible to play next week.  So this is a test, of sorts.  If we get enough players for next Thursday’s game, we will continue to organize games until the Main Street Arena closes on April 2.  If not, that’s the end of the season at MSA for the Sperry Marine Hockey Club.  So it’s up to you.

Sperry Hockey Cancelled

Sperry Hockey Cancelled Thursday March 9 2017

I’m sorry to say there will be no Sperry hockey game on Thursday, March 9, 2017. This may or may not come as a shock to you. The reason for this was a rather abrupt schedule change we were handed on Friday afternoon. Min Street Arena Manager, Will van der Linde, informed us that Hockey Director, Gary Jones, had pushed the Sperry time back from its usual starting time to 10:30 PM due to the adult league hockey schedule. We knew nothing about this ahead of time, or we would’ve certainly alerted you. Because of this late game time, plus the fact that it’s the time of year when league games are plentiful and densely packed, we decided to cancel this game.

Main Street Arena Sold

Main Street Arena for SaleIt looks like the fat lady has sung.

The Main Street Arena has been sold. According to a story by NBC29 it was purchased by Taliaferro Junction, LLC, and Jaffray Woodriff for $5.7M.  Mark Brown was asking $6.5M.  He originally purchased the arena for about $3 million in 2010.  So I’d say it was a pretty sweet deal for Mark and the other owners.

According to the Charlottesville City Assessor’s online records, the Main Street Arena’s 2017 total assessed value is $5,795,845.  In 2016 it was assessed at $4,000,500.  So that’s a hefty increase of $1,795,345 in just one short year.

When Will Rink Close?

Construction is expected to get underway in the spring of 2018. So that means hockey will continue until the end of the spring 2017 season, and it is likely to return in the fall for one final season.

New Rink in the Future

A press release from Payne, Ross & Associates says that the new owners plan to donate materials and equipment to a business venture seeking to get a new ice skating park up and running in a new location. They don’t state who that business venture is or where a new rink might be located. Any guesses?Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail
